Brotherton Speciality Products was founded in 1878 and today still operates from its original site in Wakefield, Yorkshire. From its earliest beginnings Brotherton has always specialised in the manufacture of ammonia salts. Over the years the product range has been broadened, whilst at the same time maintaining a key position in ammonia salts. The Company is now a major supplier internationally, to a broad range of diverse industries.

Brotherton has grown substantially over the last 20 years and progress will continue through investment in and development of its core technologies. The Company places a strong emphasis on the quality of its products and services, of which adherence to the Corporate Policies and ISO 9001:2000 is an integral part.

Joint Venture and Current Ownership

Formed in April 2006, Esseco UK LLP is a joint venture between Esseco Group Srl of Trecate, Italy, the global leader in the manufacture and supply of sulphur dioxide derivatives and Brotherton Speciality Products Limited of Wakefield, UK market leader in speciality inorganics.

Based in Wakefield, UK, Esseco UK manufactures and supplies a range of sodium, ammonium and potassium-based inorganic liquid sulphite products for a wide range of applications in the food, paper, water, photographic, oil, agricultural and chemical industries.

Both Esseco and Brotherton have had a long history of manufacturing sulphur dioxide derivatives and the new company is ideally located to service the UK and Irish markets.

Esseco UK's sister plant based in Trecate, Italy offers a comprehensive range of both dry and liquid sulphur dioxide derivatives for the global market.

The Company places a strong emphasis on the quality of its products and services and is certified to ISO 9001:2000.

In March 2008, Brotherton was acquired by Esseco Group.
